Me and my significant other have recently got into a bit of a board game obsession. We’ve played Monopoly, Game of Life, Scrabble and well loads others. What we are also obsessed with is Doctor Who. Combine those two things and you’ve got a little slice of heaven for us. So when I found this little gem, Doctor Who: The Time Travelling Action Game, I was overjoyed and very eager to give it a try. Here’s my thoughts:

What you find in the box is:

1  game board

24 Alien game cards

72 Energy Tokens

6 Doctor playing pieces

1 Spinner

and 1 awesome TARDIS model that spins the board around!

How is works is each player is given 8 energy tokens and 4 monster playing cards. The players must land on their respective monsters and do battle with them making use of their energy tokens. The spinner dictates how many spaces you can move. You can land on alien spaces, or spaces where you can earn or lose tokens or finally time portals which you can use to fling yourself around the board.

The board, the spinner and the cards. Check out that awesome TARDIS in the middle!

One of the most interesting aspects of the game is the fact that, at random times, you’ll hear that classic TARDIS noise and the board will spin round, moving the spaces on the board. One minute you can be nearing in on that climatic battle with a Dalek, only to have the board move your target all the way across to the opposite side.

The game is one of the most fun board games I’ve ever played. The game has real tactical depth as you have to use your tokens wisely. Do you spend them to rid your own hand? Or save them in order to give your opponent one of your tougher Aliens. The sound effect of the TARDIS is a brilliant addition that really sucks you into the game and the overall design is really fantastic.

If you can find a copy I greatly recommend that you give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!
