I’m a huge Jose Gonzalez fan. I think he’s got one of the most unique voices in music. Combine that voice with some amazing, experimental backing music that you get in the band he fronts; Junip and you’ve got one awesome combination. Here’s the list:
5) Far Away
Hearing the original version of ‘Far Away’ as you ride into Mexico in Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption is one of those moments that I’ll never forget. It just sets the scene perfectly and makes you reflect with its smooth tones. The Junip version of this is the complete opposite. It’s fast tempo is every bit as enjoyable as it’s more mellow counterpart.
As it opens with ‘Step infront of a runaway train / Just to feel alive again’ you get this massive boost of adrenaline. Perfect
4) Walking Lightly
This is just a really serene and mellow song. It has a nice eastern inspired feeling to it that sets you at ease. It picks up towards the end with a bit more soul and backing in the vocals that really hits home and it manages to be really meaningful with its one lyric ‘We’re all walking lightly.’
This is more of a heavy number from Junip with loud crashing drums. I think in one word, I’d describe it as cool. It’s also one of their few shorter numbers. It provides a nice contrast with the rest of their library.
2) Line of Fire
One of the most meaningful songs Junip have produced. ‘Line of Fire’ runs this high tempo and fast beat that gets you moving. It’s an intense song for sure, that culminates in a very powerful final third in which Gonzalez blasts out the vocals; ‘Step back from the line of fire!’ time and time again. The video for the song is absolutely excellent as well.
1) In Every Direction
The song that really got me hooked into the different kinds of music Junip can produce. There’s just a wave of spirit in this song that is unmatched. The music is mixed really well, its sounds is unique, the lyrics and vocals are fantastic and you’ll most definitely find yourself singing along. If you’re looking for a place to start, then it’s here. ‘In Every Direction’ truly has everything.
